Campus Use Files (CUF) / Scientific Use Files (SUF)
The FDZ-DZHW provides data from higher education research and science studies for secondary use as Campus Use Files (CUF) and Scientific Use Files (SUF).
Campus Use Files (CUF)
are totally anonymised data sets created for academic teaching.
Scientific Use Files (SUF)
are de facto anonymised data sets created for research.
The search portal of the FDZ-DZHW gives an overview of the available data and provides free access to various documentation materials on these data, such as data and method reports, survey instruments and, in the case of quantitative data, information at variable level (e.g., univariate frequency distributions, statistical measures). There, users can directly select and request the data they require. Relevant background information can be found in the table below.

Detailed information on how the data are anonymised by means of statistical measures (usually aggregation or deletion of information) can be found in the section “Anonymisation” of the respective data and methods report on the data, which can be downloaded from the search portal. |

The data are made available for download so that users can work with them on their local computer, analyse them with their own software and, if desired, link them to other data.

|
Users access the data stored on the terminal server of the FDZ-DZHW remotely, from their local computers, with the help of a virtual desktop. There, they can analyse the data with software commonly used in the community (e.g., Stata, SPSS, R, MAXQDA) (due to software licensing costs, numbers may be limited).
|
The data are made available at a specially secured guest workstation in a controlled environment on the premises of the FDZ-DZHW and can be analysed there with software commonly used in the community (e.g., Stata, SPSS, R, MAXQDA) (due to software licensing costs, numbers may be limited). Specially secured means: only individual access to the room, obligation to lock the work computer when absent, disconnection of the work computer from the Internet, locking of USB ports, prohibition of taking laptops and mass storage devices, taking mobile phone devices and devices for image recording only with a security seal, prohibition of autonomous installation of software. |
|
Access The data are not password-protected. After expiry of the period of use, data must be deleted. The results of their own analyses are available to data users on their local computer

|
Access An individual user account is created, the password is communicated by telephone.
|
Access An individual account is set up for users, the password is communicated personally. An autonomous transfer of files to own data carriers and vice versa is not possible. However, data users can request import or export of data. The FDZ-DZHW checks such requests for possible violations of data protection law. Import/export is carried out if there is no objection. |

Individual preparation of data
It is also possible, for a fee, to request an individual preparation of further DZHW data that have not yet been available for secondary use (cf. cost model; this service is not available to students). Since an individual concept for the anonymisation of requested data must be created in consultation with the user before the data are made available and processed accordingly, the provision of individually processed data may take several weeks, or months in the case of more complex requests. If you are interested, please contact us via e-mail first.
Note on the timeliness of information
The above regulations and processes for data use represent the current status. They replace earlier regulations and processes that may still be described in older documentation materials.
